Caltech

Hrm....some quick thoughts/comments about caltech:

1. There are so many really smart people. (i.e. IPhO gold medalists, etc...)
2. Everyone is SO humble. Not just fake/polite humility...but real humility.
3. The Caltech environment really creates close bonds. Very tight-knit community.
4. Food is yummy :D
5. Board games, Badminton, Ping pong, and more fun!!!! (more applicable to certain houses though, not all of Caltech).

Neatness

So, I've never been really neat. I can sometimes muster up the will to clean up my room or organize it in some way and even maintain it for short preiods of time, but I think I really need to fix this habit and what better time than college? Of course, don't wait till college to fix your bad habits...but I do think a new start can give some motivation. Anyways....so I wanted to try an idea I got but I need at least one other person who also is trying to do the same thing. Anyone interested? :P hehe...it might not work, but ::shrug:: might as well try. Just tell me by commenting/iming or something, hummm.

And for all the other people who aren't interested or are already neat, please do pray for me/remind me while I am at college in this area. I really think neatness and responsibility are things I fall short in (among many other things). Thanks! :)

Funn....

I was reading a little on a caltech forum and I stumbled upon a discussion on the Ch1a final....here are some quotes:

Yes, the exams tend to shove that cone up there a little. One problem from the Chem 1a final asked you to basically deduce the shape and and existence of delta bonds.

I may be in the minority here, but I actually liked the Ch1a final. I don't remember the specifics, but more of a feeling of "Well, I just got raped. But hey, it was kind of fun."

I agree with Fedor. The chem1a final was horrible in a very amusing way. I remember drawing a picture of myself on fire. A friend explained "Part 1 was like 'Here, I have candy' and part 2 was like 'Get into my van.'"

Sounds like fun!!!

oh goodness.... I don't like packing because I know I'm going to forget something...oh well, here we go.
haha, I should stop posting about my sister :P good thing she doesn't read my livejournal, otherwise she'd probably kill me, heehee

I think I should've realized by now that when Christina complains about doing poorly about something or not being prepared, that means she's going to own it. Cause she was talking about how "hard" the Chem SATII was and how she was messing up on some questions and doing poorly blahblhablah, so I actually thought she wasn't going to do very well (maybe low 700s?) and so I was like don't worry about it, etcetc

Wellwell....her scores came in. 800 MathIIC, 800 Chem, 770 Bio (Christina!
LONG comment on an article titled "Christian Virginity Overrated"

Added Note: okay, this was originally a comment on this article which was on my friend's lj. Unfortunately, it got a bit long....so when I went to submit it...."Comment Not Posted * Sorry, but your comment of 16470 characters exceeds the maximum character length of 4300. Please go back, shorten it, and try posting it again." Okay then....well after all that effort in commenting, I decided to post the comment in my lj and then link to it from my comment. If you're going to read my comment, you should probably read the article first or it might not be as clear. but whatever you want.

Okay, hrm...I guess I'll comment cause most people seem to agree and I totally disagree w/ not just his arguments, but his way of writing...

So uh, let's go through the article and see where there are actual facts/logical conclusions and where there are just assumptions or playing with words to make things sound absurb or whatever. Feel free to point out any parts/paragraphs where he does make a good conclusion that I missed.

1) Title: Okay, so nothing yet, but of course. The title just describes his argument and we'll look in his essay for any support...

2) Paragraph 1: Okay, he describes "unholy" events called Purity Balls.
Comment: Says nothing about them yet except to try to give an impression that they're really stupid/bad.

3) Paragraph 2: Now he describes purity balls more specifically. they are events in which Christian dads and teenage daughters go somewhere to do something that we don't know yet until paragraph 3. He describes them as going to "lose their minds."
Comment: again, he only tries to give a bad impression using words such as "creepy" and "lose their minds". No support yet.

4) Paragraph 3: So he describes a pledge where a daughter says she will remain pure and sex free until marriage.
Comment: Instead of saying marriage, he says "high priest" and says the father is receiving her like a "sanitized and overprotected and libinously inept servant". UMMMM...okay. That was a blatant attempt of making something sound stupid without actually having any evidence/arguments. So if you actually click the link he links too off of "high priest", it is very obvious that they do not view the daughters as any of the above descriptions... the daughters are pledging to remain pure, and the fathers are pledging to "be pure in my own life as a man, husband and father." to be "a man of integrity and accountability". Okay....NOTHING about the daughter as a "libidinously inept servant". So the portrayal the writer uses is TOTALLY WRONG! It totally changes the spirit of the event.

5) Random Insert: "Would that I were making this up"
Comment: Okay...an attempt to make it sound like the above situation is a totally lunatic crazy thing. I guess he needs to make up for the fact that he has no arguments yet...

6) Paragraph 4: Continues describing the purity ball by talking about the father's pledge.
Comment: OKAY, this paragraph just makes me mad, cause he pulls in all this stuff that is totally made up!!! First he begins by (again), trying to make it sound like the dad is some overseer "wickedly drilling" his daughter's virginal purity and a "disturbing dogma". First of all, he is trying to use his argument as a fact to argue for his argument! To clarify...his argument is that virginity and naive chastity are absurb. Well, apparentely, he's using "disturbing dogma" to refer to virginity and he has not presented evidence (or even arguments!) for that yet. As for "wickedly drilling" umm...I don't know where he got that from. Heck, you could say any principles parents teach you at a young age are "wickedly drilled in". As for "great amounts of rage and confusion and secret stashes of cheap scotch, although his pledge claims it's with honor and integrity and lots of bewildering Godspeak. Which, in many households, is essentially the same thing". Where he gets that conclusion...I have no idea. It's seems totally made up out of his own views and conceptions. It seems like another attempt to discredit it...without any foundation. Anyone could make up something like this about anything...

7) Paragraph 5: Says that's it's true that its happening.
Comment: Okay, so ntohign really besides affirming it's true... Only relevant if his earlier statements actually had arguments

8) Paragraph 6: Says what he thinks is the christian view: that premarital sex is evil, female sexuality must be repressed, and girls need to be taught by fathers to "dilute their sexual power", etc
Comment: One thing is says is true - Christians do believe that premarital sex is wrong. Besides that, everything is fluff again. i.e. "lest it tempt men to sin like gleeful pagans licking ice cream from the pierced nipples of the devil". The only point of that was to make christians seem absurb, but uh...that came from his head and really is just a reflection of him. No argument there. Basically he just twisted the christian view that people should do what they can to not tempt others. And NO, that is not just in regards to female sexuality, but in all aspects of temptation. For example, I wouldn't purposely leave a hundred bucks lying out in random places of the house where guests will then face the temptation of stealing the money. Of course I trust most of the people coming to my house, but why would I knowingly make them face temptation? I wouldn't. In the same way, girls, you have to know that men do have temptations or what not. i.e. If you are very scantily clad, whether you like it or not, you may make some guys have lustful thoughts. (If someone doesn't agree with me on this, please tell me). So yes, people should try not to tempt others as much as possible...beyond that whatever he said is fluff. As for "Girls do not know how to handle their own genitalia and therefore must be taught how to dilute their sexual power"... ummm...is that supposed to be an argument? No, that is not a christian belief and again, he is only trying to make it seem absurb by stating things that are not true. Parents teach children principles and guide them in different ways. That is why parents teach children to share, etc, whatever your parents taught you. So in the same way, parents will teach their children to be cautious not to tempt others and how to avoid unwanted attention, there's nothing unusual about that.

9) Paragraph 7: Says that the path to cultural destruction is a virgin that doesn't know how to have sex or have an orgasm marrying a man who doesn't have experience either.
Comment: Okay, WOOHOO, his first attempt at an argument!!!! Too bad it really fails... (in my opinion). He doesn't really say why there'll be cultural destruction or even what problems there will be. (Okay, he hints that there might be a problem with having sex, because the guy might "be unable to tell an erogenous zone from an elbow." Okay, I don't know what an erogenous zone means, but uh, obviously there is no problem with having sex or producing children because many people, such as my parents, have 5 children and had no experience with sex, etc before marriage). So...his only attempt at an argument has no support!! OH NO!

10) Paragraph 8: Saying the above paragraph is the standard reciple for emotional, physical, and spiritual catastrophe and 17 years of marital misery with a divorce and 4 unhappy children.
Comment: OKAYYY...I would say that is probably his experience because obviously he is very bitter but whatever. Okay, let's take one example: my parents. They are emotionally healthy, physically healthy, and spiritually healthy. They have had over 20 years of a happy marriage with no divorce! and 5 VERY HAPPY children. (I would argue that my siblings and I are happier than I think many people are, but that is subjective). He fails to mention the emotional, physical, and spiritual consequence of premarital sex....I am pretty sure, that there is a LOT of emotional hurt that comes with premarital sex because of the uncommitted relationships and in terms of physical....umm...anyone heard of STDs? As for spiritual, it is just absurb if he tries to argue that having premarital sex will make you spiritually healthy...I think the opposite is true (but again, that's subjective because I'm a christian so my view of being "spiritually healthy" might be different than yours)

11) Paragraph 9: Okay, he makes his conclusion! (Wait...a conclusion before any arguments? That's weird). "Let's just say it outright: The superiority of virginity myth, it is a massive, underreported disaster." It is a cancer, etcetcetc....brings in a quote from voltaire that says "it is one of the great superstitions of the human mind to have imagined that virginity could be a virtue."
Comment: So he's basically stating his argument, and saying it's very obvious and a massive disaster. Too bad he doesn't have any arguments yet so this really serves no purpose.

12) Paragraph 10: He asks "don't we have it exactly backward?" and says shouldn't happiness be equated with exceptional amounts of sexual training and awareness (which obviously means premarital sex unless this paragraph has no relevance to his argument). He says "You already know the answer."
Comment: Yep, I know the answer. And the answer is that he is totally wrong. His writing shows just how flawed his argument is and really gives no reason why "we have it exactly backward."

13) Paragraph 11: He talks about the plague of sexual incompetence in our land infecting schools, popular culture, and the presidential administration. Says that it endorses sexual stupidity through failed abstinence programs, STD misinformation, refusal to support quality birth control and lies about sin and depravity which results in miseries, drug addictions, divorces, stresses, gun fetishes, and online porn obsessions.
Comment: Okay, he argues that there is a plague and brings up several supporting arguments (YAY! Good for you! Finally some attempts at support!!) Let's take a look at the supporting arguments. First point: He says the "sexual stupidity" results in ensuing miseries. On the contrary, there are many miseries that result from premarital sex and the breakups that ensue. Miseries from waiting till marriage until sex? Please explain... if he tries to say divorce/family fights are a result, that is pretty sad because that has nothing to do with sex before marriage or after. Next point: Oh! There we go, now he says they result in "drug addictions, divorces, stresses, gun fetishes, and online porn obsessions". Okay...like I said before, this has nothing to do with having sex after marriage... What? Does he think a couple are going to have an argument over the fact that a spouse didn't have sex with someone else before?! If he's trying to say they'll have an argument based on failure of having sex, again, I addressed that earlier. There are many many many people who have not have had premarital sex who have many children and I'm sure do have sex. As for drug addictions and stresses, don't you think that could result from an unwanted pregnancy? From an emotional hurt resulting from a breakup after some guy has sex with someone and leaves? And how about online porn obsessions... I think it is those people who are always obsessing over sex and I'm betting those people who are having sex who're obsessing over porn. I have not and will not have premarital sex and I don't have online porn obsessions!!! Am I an anomoly? I think not. As for STD misinformation, I would beg him to clarify. No evidence again....and something that seems pretty unlikely. (What...does he think a dad's going to say you don't get STDs from sex?)

14) Paragraph 12: Says that over half of the teens who take a virginity pledge break the vow in a year, 88% have sex before marriage. It results in more oral and anal sex and they marry younger, have fewer sexual partners and have exactly the same rate of STDs.
Comment: Okay, here is some GOOD supporting evidence (except for the part that says they have fewer sexual partners than others....UHH...how is that bad?) In response to the rest of it, this is what I have to say. That evidence DOES NOT give a conclusion that virginity is absurb. It gives the conclusion that the virginity pledges fail. And yes, I have to admit given the evidence, that virginity pledges probably do fail. As for having oral and anal sex because they're trying to avoid normal sex, that's because the principle behind the pledge was not learned by the individual. If they are having oral and anal sex and thinking they are keeping their pledge, they are misguided. The principle behind the virginity pledge is based on the biblical beliefs and principles of purity, which is not just not having premarital sex. So in conclusion, this paragraph DOES NOT give any good evidence that virginity is absurb. What it would be good evidence for is for an essay bashing christianity and saying how statistically, modern "christians" aren't any morally better than nonchristians. One of the most saddening things to me, but true. I could write another really long post about that, but to make it brief, I think you should judge christianity by what it teaches (based on the bible), and not on what people claiming to be christians do. On one hand, christians are and should be representatives of God and christianity and it is terrible that many modern christians don't actually take the teachings into practice. But what I want to say to you is don't miss out on what Christianity ACTUALLY is about just because of the actions of some people claiming to be christians...they may or may not represent what it actually is. If you want to bash christianity or if you just want to gain some understanding of what it actually is, read the bible. THEN, I am open to any arguments/discussions you have against christianity or just any questions. If you take the terrible actions of some christian to disregard christianity, then if the actual teaching of christianity (based on the bible) opposed that action, wouldn't your conclusion have been wrong? You may miss out on something. Read the bible and if after you read it, you don't disagree, fine, at least you know what you're disagreeing with. (Note: if you do take up that, I would suggest you start with the new testament because there's a lot of things you need the knowledge of the new testament for to understand the old testament. Also, if you don't have a bible, I can give you one of mine or buy you one).

15) Paragraph 13: Says that we should have a new sexually informative agenda (again, obviously with premarital sex...otherwise this is irrelevant to the article) that teaches the pleasures and joys of the flesh, etc...and it's potential to transform and ease tension.
Comment: So now he's on his conclusion so there're no arguments, only summary of his point...which has remained unproven. I want to add something because he paints christians as viewing sex as evil and terrible. Nope, wrong. In fact, we believe that sex is a wonderful thing but in the context of marriage. So please don't twist the belief and say christians say sex is horrible and evil, but christians say sex outside of marriage is wrong.

16) Paragraph 14: Says wouldn't be be totally transformed and free of the immature mentality that virgins are dumb immaculate prizes to be won?
Comment: Okay, so conclusion again and no support... I would like to add that nowhere is there even a hint that virgins are "dumb immaculate prizes to be won". I think if there is that concept, that would be in those who ARE having premarital sex (I have heard of things were people brag about sleeping with virgins or something? Or have contests of how many virgins they can sleep with). But as far as the christian view goes, that is totally void. So I guess he just brings up another argument for me....in the current culture, women are treated as "dumb immaculate prizes to be won" as sex objects. In a couple of generations, who knows what it will be like. Anyways, back to the whole point of this comment: he has no support in this paragraph.

Final conclusion: The author has almost no arguments!!! and no evidence that supports his argument!! Therefore this article is just a piece of junk (sorry to put it that way...but that really is my opinion), that uses fluffy and misleading language to try to give a misrepresentation of "christian virginity" (or just virginity in general). His only piece of good evidence does not support his argument, but shows that things like "virginity pledges" don't work and could be an argument saying modern "christians" aren't any more moral than non christians. <- I gave a super brief address to this in "14) Paragraph 12:". Feel free to discuss with me further.

Okay....if you read through this entire comment...you are amazing. haha, but yah, I just really had to say that cause I didn't expect so many people to be supportive of the article. If you totally (or even kind of) disagree with some part of my comment, I would LOVE to discuss with you, and I don't hold grudges for arguments or anything :P Yah...okay phew, that was long.

owww...my fingers hurt

Okie doke, last day of prefrosh :) It's been fun so far! So...false rumors of caltech so far:

1. Caltech is TINY. Yep, caltech is small, much smaller than most universities. However, I heard from others that it was like...2 times the size of SHS or smaller than west valley college and that is blatantly untrue :P

2. Caltech is ugly. Nope, it just isn't :D It's actually quite pretty...but maybe it's cause it's spring right now :)

3. People are uber nerdy. Naw...well, I'm sure it's true, but they definitely don't act like it. so far I have spotted 0 math/science shirts (except for the prefrosh ones) and there has been no nerd talk.

4. Caltech's prefrosh is boring. I guess it probably might be to some people, but personally, I'm enjoying it. Food is good (but I'm not picky), games are good, classes are...okay (almost fell asleep in one). Overall: good!

Anyways, seems like Caltech is really cool. I met some cool Christians on campus and there was a really fun Mafia/Games Night :P I won BANG! MUAHAHAHA ;) I think one (caltech) guy was um...looking not happy? Cause apparentely he's good and he thought we were all new, haha. I should be careful to be nicer so they don't hate me :D Capture the Flag tonight. Oh yea, the business program at Caltech seems REALLY AWESOME. So yea, I'll probably be getting a double major in EE and business if I go :) funfunfun!!! Unfortunately, the rumor that Caltech is crazy hard/busy is um...quite true. Not only that, everyone I've talked to so far agrees that EE is one of the hardest majors :( (along with chemE and physics). So if I go, I get to die in EE...mm...yum. Yep, I've been trying to be more social/welcoming and conversational to others which is working out pretty well I guess, but not always :P Oh, a rumor that is definitely true is the boy:girl ratio. Actually, according to the statistics, the boy:girl ratio should be 2:1 (1/3 girls). Although that has to be true statistically, it really looks like the ratio is more like 4:1 or worse (just from looking around and stuff). Then again, maybe all the girls are hiding in the dorms? ::shrug::

Hum de dum, just got to Caltech now :) Seems pretty cool so far and it's not as ugly as everyone claims it is :P (or maybe I just don't have an eye for these kind of things). The rooms are pretty big, so that's nice. Can't wait to look around. Hope everyone's having fun at school ;)

hum, a lot of times I notice people (me included) stuck on some conflict they had with someone else or angry/complaining about someone. They rant (or write) about what the other person did, how unfair it is, how unreasonable it is...

I thought of an experience I had when I was younger.

I used to get in trouble with my dad a lot. He used to be really strict and had a bad temper. Once (or several times), he lectured me on something and it soon escalated to be pretty bad and he was getting mad at me and I was getting mad at him (in my head). I remember saying something about his bad temper or about how he also was "bad" in what he was lecturing me about. His response was (in chinese):

Is this about me or about you? Are you trying to correct me or are you trying to learn?Do you or do you not want to learn? You be concerned with fixing your problems. I'll fix mine.

Of course I had to respond (to whether or not I'm learning his point) yes. Saying no would make him more angry and lead to more hours of lecture. Whenever he said that I thought it was really unfair and hypocritical of him. Here he was saying that I had to fix my own problems without regard to his and there he was pounding me on my problems and not fixing his own!!

Looking back, it's amazing how true his words are. Often we get so caught up in the other person's faults that we don't gain anything out of the experience. Sometimes it's DEFINITELY the other person's fault. Sometimes they do things that are horrible to us even when we only made a small mistake. But even so, I have realized how important it is to look at what I can learn from that experience. What did I do wrong? What could I have changed? What character is God trying to build in me by that? Sometimes I get so heated up in complaining about how wrong the other person is...that I never get the chance to learn my mistake. Let the other person fix their own problems...or not fix them if they so choose. Justifying how right you were ends up putting you on the losing side...for the sake of justifying yourself you lose the chance to grow.

P.S. Not saying my dad is bad. He's awesome :D In fact, now his temper has gotten better by LEAPS and BOUNDS. So he must've been fixing himself while he was pounding me :D

edit: this is not targetted at anyone!! really!

My family was in the car driving back from eating dinner and I was looking at my brother's shirt. It has a bear that says Captain Argo in it. Basically in argonaut they have these bears and they named a big one captain argo (and that shirt is their class shirt or something). So anyways, he started telling me of this other teddy bear (smaller one) that the class also named (based on votes).

So he told me that he suggested the name "pickle"...yep...and apparentely a lot of people liked it and they voted it as the bear name. hehe. So yes, they have a bear in the classroom called pickle...mmm...interesting :D

Yay! First semi-unboring day of summer! Cause I actually had stuff to do :P So let's see...what did I do today. Wait...shoot...I already forgot what I did in the morning :D oh well. Uh...so mid morning I learned texas hold 'em poker thing on yahoo and I lost lots of money! yay! (fake money of course) hehe. Then ate lunch...oh yes! I remember one thing I did in the morning...checked out an AP bio book >.< yeck...oh well, something to pass the time with. Then after lunch, I did some random stuff (cards probably? maybe more texas hold 'em...forget) and from 2-4 I had my first tutoring (this summer)! Fun! Two upcoming sophomores in chemH. Then played speed scrabble with matthew and my sister and then two person bridge with matthew. Oh yes, I ate my sister's cheez-its too :D or some of them. Thanks jensine! Then I was bored again :P I need to do something...yes... anyways, off to dinner soon and then church.
